Eye-popping costumes take centre stage in Lichtenstein show
A foam bikini sculpted into ice-cream scoops and a translucent dress frosted with glitter will catch the eye at a dance show preview tomorrow (Thursday).
The colourful creations, designed by Performance Costume students at Edinburgh College of Art, will be part of a performance at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art on Saturday, 12 December.
The third year art students have been inspired by the ARTIST ROOMS Roy Lichtenstein exhibition, which is currently on display at the gallery.
They will team up with students from Edinburgh College’s BA Honours Dance course, who will don the vibrant costumes and perform in the exhibition space.
Dayna Ali’s foam bikini design pokes fun at pop art’s depiction of women. Her cartoonish costume includes an ice cream top made with expanding foam, blonde wig and excessive make-up.
Olivia Carnera’s translucent dress uses PVC, glitter and an embellished collar to give a water-like effect.
Other outfits include Yan Smiley’s extraordinary extended-limbed blue bodysuit and Auguste Greiciute’s outfit, which is printed with hundreds of computer symbols and has a swirl of neon yellow elastic covering the face. Also on show will be a leotard covered in plastic and leather flowers by Velia Ansorg, who was inspired by Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies series.
