The service at the Cathedral was organised by the Scotland Board of the UK charitable initiative Remembering Srebrenica, working with the First Minister’s office. It is part of a series of high-profile events across the UK to commemorate the genocide in the week leading up to 11 July - Srebrenica Memorial Day. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal represents the UK in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Complex tomorrow (11 July).
More than 150 specially-invited guests gathered to hear Nura Begović address the service, which was attended by fellow Srebrenica Mothers Nura Mustafić, Aiša Omerović, Refija Hadjibulić and genocide survivor Nedžad Avdić.
The service was led by The Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Faith and community leaders and representatives from Scotland’s Youth Organisations also attended.
The service was followed by a reception at nearby Parliament Hall, hosted by the First Minister, to welcome the Bosnian visitors to Scotland.
Two of Scotland’s most admired authors were at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (SNPG) in Edinburgh today for the unveiling of the latest addition to the national collection - a striking new portrait of renowned crime writer Ian Rankin. The meticulous and thoughtful painting was commissioned from Edinburgh-based artist Guy Kinder by another of Scotland’s most high-profile contemporary writers, Alexander McCall Smith, who has generously presented it to the Gallery.
Guy Kinder’s insightful portrait depicts Rankin in a contemplative pose, in the surroundings of the Oxford Bar, the Edinburgh pub famously frequented by both his fictional creation, Inspector Rebus, and the author himself. The portrait was commissioned in 2013 by McCall Smith, the bestselling author and friend of Ian Rankin, and was first shown, to great acclaim, in the annual exhibition of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in May of last year.
Following an unveiling at the SNPG on 25 March, the portrait will join the Gallery’s rich collection of portraits which celebrate the achievements of Scotland’s great literary figures, from Burns and Scott to Stevenson and Barrie.
• First Public Display of Bonnie Prince Charlie Portrait
National Museum of Scotland
Thursday 25 April – Monday 27 May 2019

A portrait of Prince Charles Edward Stuart will go on general public display for the first time at the National Museum of Scotland from 25 April 2019. This is a rare opportunity to see the portrait on public display for a short period of time.
The portrait of the young prince is by the renowned Venetian artist Rosalba Carriera. Pastel on blue paper, the half-length portrait depicts the prince wearing the Order of the Garter. Previously held in a private collection until last year when it came up for auction, it was purchased by The Pininski Foundation who has generously lent it for short-term display at the National Museum of Scotland.
Tap-Tastic Melvin Gets Movin’ with Top Teenage Edinburgh Dancer
Rhythm & Blues legend Movin' Melvin Brown, aged 72, and 17-year-old Edinburgh tap dancer Tamzin Burgess got together to compare moves in the heart of the capital.
Movin' Melvin is not only performing a high-octane Fringe show, Chuck Berry Lives! but will be teaching Edinburgh folk the basics of tap at special classes this Saturday.
Melvin, from the USA, loves to dance with talented local people everywhere he goes on his worldwide tours – and was mightily impressed with Tamzin who this month won the Leigh Anderson Memorial Trophy and the Edinburgh Tap trophy and was second in the Tap World Cup in Germany in May.
The Dancing With The Star – Movin’ With Melvin masterclass, which offers a fun route to health and fitness, will take place at Assembly Checkpoint on Saturday, 19 August at 11am.
And for those who love it and want to carry on with classes there’s the Mary Phelan school, where Tamzin trained, which has been in Edinburgh for 40 years. And tap classes are also available at Dance Base, Scotland’s National Centre for Dance in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.
